CCR in a nutshell

We are a local NGO development network that advances the protection and empowerment of Tanzanian children. We campaign for legal reform to protect children, catalyse a popular movement to nurture children and pilot innovative scaleable models for protecting children.

We are:

  • a local NGO development network that advances the protection and empowerment of Tanzanian children.
  • In 2004 Mkombozi, East African Law Society, HakiMadini and Legal & Human Rights Centre collaborated in to protest about the round-up of street children in Arusha. The consortium was formalized when we registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation on 24th June 2009 (Registration number: NGO/3236).
  • We are a strong and proactive group of principled institutions and individuals who are passionate about the rights and welfare of children.
  • The network is a core of self-selecting organisations, but we serve as a resource and catalyst for change for a larger network of over 3,000 individuals who are committed to protecting children.
  • We provide a vibrant and innovative forum to promote the accountability of duty bearers towards children, to replicate good practice, share learning and catalyze adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

We envision:

  • a time when Tanzania protects the human rights of every child, and when consideration of children’s best interest informs policies, practices and decisions.

Our mission is to:

  • advance the protection and empowerment of children and youth in Tanzania;
  • to advocate for the upholding of children’s rights;
  • to replicate good practice and share learning amongst people and agencies working with children and youth in East Africa and beyond,
  • to engage communities and leaders to uphold the best interests of children and youth in Tanzania;
  • to mobilize national, regional and international movements to advance the rights of children,
  • to partner with others to achieve our objectives.

Our agenda:

  • Tanzania will not achieve its development aspirations if it does not invest in keeping children safe. Abuse impedes the development of the child, and consequently Tanzania’s development.
  • CCR wants Tanzanians and the Tanzanian government to recognize that the personal is political, that every choice we make with regards to children has implications for us as a nation.
  • CCR wants to shift the conventional wisdom that children are only the recipients of services and the business of families to see them as both engaged actors in their own lives and the drivers of development.

We are different because:

  • We support people to make meaning and understand their world differently using strengths based approaches.
  • We tap into people’s feelings and emotions as powerful catalysts for change.
  • We start by building the individual’s self knowledge and self belief as a precursor to enabling them to make demands on others and on government.
  • We support people to see that the expertise and the change starts with them.
  • We celebrate and communicate the strengths in Tanzanian care practices in a simple, unexpected, concrete, credible and emotional way.
  • We engage with individuals in social institutions and organizations so that collective action can start to emerge and systems can shift into new trajectories.
  • We combine Activist Research, Internet activism, Legal policy advocacy, Mass mobilization, Networking and Public Awareness Education.

We work to:

  • campaign for legal reform to protect children,
  • catalyse a popular movement to nurture children and
  • pilot innovative scaleable models for protecting children.
